How to use GIF to PNG Converter

  1. 01

    Upload your GIF

Choose or drag a GIF up to 20 MB as an anonymous visitor, or up to 200 MB on a paid plan. The file is sent to our servers over an encrypted HTTPS connection to start the conversion.

  2. 02

The first frame is extracted automatically

Our worker decodes the GIF and pulls out only the first frame — there are no settings to configure. Because PNG is a still-image format, any animation in the rest of the GIF is not carried over.

  3. 03

    Preview the result

A quick preview lets you confirm the extracted frame looks right before downloading, since only the first frame is ever used.

  4. 04

    Download your PNG

Get the lossless PNG through a signed download link. The output is auto-deleted from our servers within 24 hours, and the original GIF upload is removed within 6–24 hours.

Settings guide

First frame extraction (automatic)
This tool has no manual options. It always decodes the GIF, takes the first frame, and saves it as a lossless PNG with transparency preserved. To capture a different frame, edit the GIF so your target frame comes first before uploading.

About the formats

GIF

GIF is a bitmap format from 1987 that remains popular for one reason: simple looping animations. Each frame is limited to a 256-color palette, with only fully-on or fully-off transparency.

Its universal support makes GIFs easy to share anywhere, but the format is extremely inefficient: files are large and photos show visible color banding. For still images, PNG is smaller and higher quality; for animation, MP4 or animated WebP delivers the same clip at a fraction of the size.

PNG

PNG is a lossless raster image format created in the mid-1990s as a patent-free replacement for GIF. It is the standard choice for screenshots, logos, UI graphics, and any image that needs transparency.

PNG preserves every pixel exactly and supports a full 8-bit alpha channel, so text and sharp edges stay crisp. The downside is size: photographs saved as PNG are far larger than the same image as JPG or WebP. Support is universal in browsers and editors, making it a safe default for graphics — just avoid it for large photo collections.

Troubleshooting

My animation is gone
That is expected: PNG is a still format, so only the first frame of the GIF is kept. If you need the motion, convert with GIF to WebP instead — animated WebP preserves all frames and usually shrinks the file too.
The PNG shows the wrong frame
Only the first frame is extracted. Trim or reorder the GIF in an editor so the frame you want plays first, then convert again.
The PNG is larger than my GIF
That can happen: PNG stores the frame losslessly in full color, while GIF frames are heavily compressed with a 256-color palette. If size matters, run the result through our PNG compressor or convert to WebP instead.

FAQ

Does the PNG keep the animation?
No. PNG is a still image format, so this tool extracts the first frame of your GIF and saves it as a lossless PNG. If you want to keep the motion, use our GIF to WebP converter instead — animated WebP preserves every frame.
Why convert a GIF frame to PNG?
PNG is lossless and supports full 24-bit color plus smooth alpha transparency, so it is ideal for thumbnails, covers, or further editing whenever you need a sharp still image taken from a GIF.
Is my GIF kept private?
Yes. Files are uploaded over HTTPS and processed on our servers only to run the conversion. Converted outputs are auto-deleted within 24 hours, and uploaded inputs are removed within 6–24 hours.
What are the file size and usage limits?
Anonymous visitors can convert files up to 20 MB and get 1 free server conversion. A free account raises the limit to 50 MB with 3 conversions every 30 days and batches of up to 5 files. Paid users get 200 MB per file and batches of up to 100 files.
Can I choose a different frame instead of always the first one?
Not directly — this tool always extracts the first frame. To capture a different moment, use a GIF editor to trim or reorder the frames so your target frame is first, then upload the edited GIF.
Does the PNG keep transparency from the GIF?
Yes. If the first frame has transparent pixels, they stay transparent in the PNG. Note that GIF only supports fully on/off transparency, so the PNG will not gain soft, semi-transparent edges that were not in the source.
Does converting to PNG improve image quality?
No. PNG is lossless so it will not add any extra compression artifacts, but it also cannot restore colors that were never in the GIF — the frame was already limited to the GIF's original 256-color palette, and the PNG simply stores those same colors without further loss.
