How to use PNG to AVIF Converter

  1. 01

    Upload your PNG

Drag and drop or select a PNG — a screenshot, graphic, or illustration. Anonymous visitors can upload up to 20 MB; free accounts get 50 MB and 3 conversions every 30 days; paid plans allow 200 MB and batches of up to 100 files.

  2. 02

    Set your AVIF quality

Choose a quality from 1–100 — higher values (70+) keep text and line art crisp, while lower values maximize compression for photographic content.

  3. 03

    Server encodes with AV1

Our servers run AV1 encoding while preserving the alpha channel. This is a CPU-intensive step, especially for large or high-resolution PNGs like Retina screenshots, but our optimized pipeline keeps it as efficient as possible.

  4. 04

    Download your AVIF

Grab your AVIF from a secure signed link, with transparency intact and a much smaller footprint than the original PNG. The output file is deleted automatically within 24 hours.

Why choose our PNG to AVIF Converter

Big savings with alpha intact

AV1 compression often shrinks screenshots, graphics, and illustrations to 20–50% of their PNG size while keeping transparency fully intact.

Optimized encoding pipeline

AV1 encoding is more CPU-intensive than a simple PNG re-save, but our pipeline is tuned for efficiency rather than claiming instant results.

Broad — but not universal — support

AVIF displays in all modern browsers, though some older apps and image editors can't open it yet, which is worth checking for your workflow.

Secure processing, auto-deleted

Files travel over encrypted HTTPS and are processed on our servers; converted AVIFs are deleted within 24 hours and original uploads within 6–24 hours.

Free to start

Anonymous visitors get 1 free server conversion, and a free account adds 3 more every 30 days.

Settings guide

Quality (1–100)
Controls how aggressively the AV1 encoder compresses. Higher values keep crisp edges in text and line art; for screenshots and UI graphics, 70 or above avoids visible smudging while still saving plenty of space.

About the formats

PNG

PNG is a lossless raster image format created in the mid-1990s as a patent-free replacement for GIF. It is the standard choice for screenshots, logos, UI graphics, and any image that needs transparency.

PNG preserves every pixel exactly and supports a full 8-bit alpha channel, so text and sharp edges stay crisp. The downside is size: photographs saved as PNG are far larger than the same image as JPG or WebP. Support is universal in browsers and editors, making it a safe default for graphics — just avoid it for large photo collections.

AVIF

AVIF is a modern, royalty-free image format based on the AV1 video codec, developed by the Alliance for Open Media. It is one of the most efficient web image formats available today.

AVIF combines excellent compression with alpha transparency, HDR, and wide color gamut support, and typically beats both JPG and WebP in file size at equal quality. Encoding is noticeably slower than other formats, and viewing requires a modern browser — older systems and many desktop apps cannot open it. Keep a JPG or WebP fallback when your audience may include legacy environments.

Troubleshooting

My PNG won't upload
Confirm the file really is a PNG (some tools save JPGs with a .png extension) and that it is within your size limit (20 MB anonymous, 50 MB free, 200 MB paid).
Text or gradients look smudged
Raise the quality setting to 75–90. Sharp text and smooth gradients are the first things lossy compression affects at low quality values.
The conversion takes a long time
AVIF encoding is CPU-intensive, and large PNGs (especially screenshots at Retina resolution) take longer than a typical image conversion. Keep the page open until the download is ready.

FAQ

Is transparency kept?
Yes. AVIF has a full alpha channel, so transparent and semi-transparent areas of your PNG survive the conversion intact — logos and UI assets keep their clean edges.
How much space will I save?
A lot, usually. Screenshots, graphics, and illustrations often drop to 20–50% of the PNG size. Note that AVIF encoding is lossy at typical settings and CPU-heavy, so very large PNGs take longer to convert.
Can I batch convert multiple PNGs to AVIF?
Yes, with an account. Free accounts can batch up to 5 files at a time, and paid plans support batches of up to 100 files. Anonymous visitors can convert one file per session.
Is the AVIF output lossless like my PNG?
Not by default. At typical quality settings this tool uses lossy AV1 compression to get the biggest size savings. If you need pixel-perfect output, keep the quality setting high (90+); a fully lossless AVIF is much larger and defeats the purpose of converting away from PNG.
Why does converting PNG to AVIF take longer than other conversions?
AV1 encoding is CPU-intensive by nature, and it runs through an optimized pipeline that analyzes the image in detail to squeeze out the smallest file. Large PNGs, especially high-resolution screenshots, take longer than lightweight conversions like resizing or format changes that don't involve AVIF.
Are my files private?
Yes. Files are uploaded over an encrypted HTTPS connection and processed on our servers. Converted outputs are deleted automatically within 24 hours, and your original uploads are removed within 6–24 hours. We never share your images.
What are the size and usage limits?
Anonymous visitors can upload files up to 20 MB and get 1 free server conversion. A free account raises this to 50 MB per file, 3 free conversions every 30 days, and batches of up to 5 files. Paid plans allow 200 MB per file and batches of up to 100 files.
