How to use PNG to GIF Converter

  1. 01

    Upload your PNG image

Choose or drag a PNG up to 20 MB as an anonymous visitor, or up to 200 MB on a paid plan. The file is sent to our servers over an encrypted HTTPS connection to start the conversion.

  2. 02

An optimized palette is built automatically

The worker maps your colors to an optimized 256-color palette — the maximum GIF allows — and outputs a single still frame. There are no manual settings to configure.

  3. 03

    Check transparency and color accuracy

Fully transparent pixels stay transparent, but GIF cannot store soft alpha edges, and full-color images may show banding. Simple graphics and icons usually convert cleanly.

  4. 04

    Download your GIF

Get the converted file through a signed download link. The output is auto-deleted within 24 hours, and the uploaded PNG is removed within 6–24 hours.

Why choose our PNG to GIF Converter

One-step, automatic conversion

There is nothing to configure — upload a PNG and get a GIF back in seconds.

Secure server processing

Files upload over HTTPS and are processed only to run the conversion; outputs auto-delete within 24 hours and inputs within 6–24 hours.

No account needed to try it

Anonymous visitors get 1 free server conversion up to 20 MB before an account is required.

Generous free tier

A free account raises limits to 50 MB, 3 conversions every 30 days, and batches of up to 5 files.

Optimized palette selection

The 256-color palette is chosen automatically to best preserve your image within the limits of the GIF format.

Palette conversion (automatic)
No manual options: the converter maps your PNG to an optimized 256-color palette and writes a single-frame still GIF. Fully transparent pixels stay transparent, but GIF cannot store partial (alpha) transparency, so soft edges become hard.

About the formats

PNG

PNG is a lossless raster image format created in the mid-1990s as a patent-free replacement for GIF. It is the standard choice for screenshots, logos, UI graphics, and any image that needs transparency.

PNG preserves every pixel exactly and supports a full 8-bit alpha channel, so text and sharp edges stay crisp. The downside is size: photographs saved as PNG are far larger than the same image as JPG or WebP. Support is universal in browsers and editors, making it a safe default for graphics — just avoid it for large photo collections.

GIF

GIF is a bitmap format from 1987 that remains popular for one reason: simple looping animations. Each frame is limited to a 256-color palette, with only fully-on or fully-off transparency.

Its universal support makes GIFs easy to share anywhere, but the format is extremely inefficient: files are large and photos show visible color banding. For still images, PNG is smaller and higher quality; for animation, MP4 or animated WebP delivers the same clip at a fraction of the size.

Troubleshooting

Colors look posterized
GIF is limited to 256 colors, so full-color PNGs — especially photos and gradients — get mapped to a reduced palette with visible steps. Simple graphics and icons convert cleanly; for full color, keep PNG or use WebP.
Transparent edges look jagged
GIF only supports on/off transparency, so the soft semi-transparent pixels along PNG edges become fully opaque or fully transparent, which reads as jagged fringes. If you need smooth alpha edges, keep PNG or convert to WebP instead.
The GIF file is bigger than the PNG
PNG often compresses images more efficiently than GIF, especially detailed or colorful ones, so the GIF can come out larger. Use GIF only when a target system strictly requires .gif files; otherwise PNG or WebP is the better choice.

FAQ

Will colors change when converting PNG to GIF?
They can. GIF stores at most 256 colors, so full-color PNGs — especially photos and gradients — are mapped to a reduced palette and may show banding. Simple graphics, icons, and screenshots with few colors usually convert cleanly.
What happens to PNG transparency?
GIF only supports on/off transparency. Fully transparent areas are kept, but soft semi-transparent edges from the PNG alpha channel become hard edges. Keep PNG or use WebP if you need smooth transparency.
Is my image kept private?
Yes. Files are uploaded over HTTPS and processed on our servers only to run the conversion. Converted outputs are auto-deleted within 24 hours, and uploaded inputs are removed within 6–24 hours.
What are the file size and usage limits?
Anonymous visitors can convert files up to 20 MB and get 1 free server conversion. A free account raises the limit to 50 MB with 3 conversions every 30 days and batches of up to 5 files. Paid users get 200 MB per file and batches of up to 100 files.
Can I combine several PNGs into one animated GIF?
No. This tool converts one PNG at a time into a single still frame. To build an animated GIF from multiple images you need a dedicated animation tool that sequences frames and sets timing.
When does it actually make sense to use GIF instead of keeping PNG?
Mainly when a specific tool, platform, or legacy system strictly requires a .gif file. For everyday storage or sharing, PNG or WebP will almost always give you better color accuracy and, often, a smaller file too.
Is there a setting to control the color count or quality?
No. This tool has no manual options — it automatically builds an optimized 256-color palette (GIF's maximum) and outputs a single-frame still GIF.
